Is Tirzepatide Right For You?

Q: What is Tirzepatide?

A: Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in the prescription weight loss prescription Mounjaro. Tirzepatide/Cyanocobalamin (which is sold under the brand name Mounjaro) is a first-in-class medicine that is a “dual agonist” weight loss treatment that can cause people to lose even more weight than those who use single-agonist medications, like Semaglutide.

Q: How does it help with weight loss?

A: Like Semaglutide/Cyanocobalamin (compounded version), Tirzepatide (compounded version) slows the emptying of the stomach, making people feel full for longer. Tirzepatide/Cyanocobalamin also inhibits the brain’s hunger signals, suppressing appetite. Tirzepatide/Cyanocobalamin works in multiple ways such as helping the body release insulin when your blood sugar is high, helping the body remove excess sugar from the blood, helping stop the liver from making and releasing too much sugar, reducing how much food is eaten, and slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach. This lessens over time.

Q: What are the benefits of Tirzepatide/Cyanocobalamin?

  • Decreases food intake – reduces how much food is eaten
  • Increases insulin sensitivity – helping the body release insulin when blood sugar is high
  • Enhances first and second phase insulin secretion – helps the body remove excess sugar from the blood
  • Slows gastric emptying – slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach (this will lessen over time)
  • Reduces glucagon levels – stops the liver from making and releasing too much sugar

Q: What is the difference between Tirzepatide and Semaglutide?

A: GLP-1 drugs such as Tirzepatide, Mounjaro, Semaglutide and Ozempic are a group of new drugs that mimic GLP-1, a hormone the body releases after a meal, signaling you are full and thus lowering your overall appetite. However, Tirzepatide is unique because it attaches two different receptors (GLP-1 and GIP), unlike Semaglutide and Ozempic which only attach to one. Due to its unique dual activity, is why it’s called a “dual-agonist”. Tirzepatide has shown that it can increase weight loss for people who have a higher percentage of body fat.

Q: When can I see the results?

A: Everyone is different but results should start to show around 12 weeks after taking Mounjaro. It’s important to keep taking the prescription weekly and to come in for follow-up appointments to make sure everything is working as it should.

Q: How much weight can I expect to lose?

A: According to UCHealth.org, the average weight loss with the maximum recommended dose of Mounjaro resulted in patients losing 12 pounds more on average than those using Semaglutide.

Q: Does insurance cover the prescription?

A: Total Med does not accept insurance at this time but we do offer HSA Accounts and we have multiple financing options such as CareCredit and PatientFI. Ask your provider for more information.
